Engage students with a hands-on project that blends technology, creativity, and self-expression! In this activity, students build their own color-changing Smart Lamp that plays music, exploring the science of light and sound while learning programming and electronics. Through this project, they discover how music is composed and how to use technology to express emotions. This engaging, hands-on STEAM project also supports Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), helping students connect their feelings with creative expression—making it an ideal addition to any Kindergarten-2nd grade curriculum.
Computer Science Teaching Association Standards (CSTA)
Students will select and operate appropriate software, use appropriate terminology when describing computing systems, model how programs store and manipulate data, and develop plans that describe a program’s sequence of events, goals, and expected outcomes.
Common Core ELA
Students will determine and clarify the meaning of unknown words, recall presented information to answer a question, and participate in collaborative conversations.
Common Core Math
Students will organize, represent, and interpret data.
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
Students will plan and conduct investigations, make observations, use tools and materials to design and build a device that uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance, and analyze data from tests of two objects. Students will learn about electromagnetic radiation, information technologies and instrumentation, and wave properties.
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
Students will work collaboratively with others by following agreed-upon rules for discussion, including listening to others, speaking when recognized, and making appropriate contributions. They will develop social communication such as introducing himself/herself and others, relating experiences to a classmate, and expressing needs and feelings. Students will be able to collect, sort, and organize data.
