By October, students have settled into their new classrooms, and the novelty of a new school year has begun to fade. As routines become familiar, maintaining enthusiasm for learning can become more challenging. Fortunately, Halloween offers the perfect opportunity to reenergize the classroom with imaginative, hands-on experiences that capture young learners’ attention.
Halloween naturally inspires curiosity and creativity, especially among children in PreK through second grade. Educators can harness this seasonal excitement by connecting classroom lessons to themes that students already love. From monsters and ghosts to witches and pumpkins, Halloween stories easily lend themselves to art, music, physical education, and language arts. But these beloved characters and tales also provide rich opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
We’ve compiled a collection of Halloween STEAM activities that pair favorite storybooks with engaging engineering, coding, and design challenges—bringing science and math into the Halloween celebration while encouraging creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Why Halloween Is Perfect for Integrated STEAM Learning
Halloween isn’t just a seasonal celebration—it’s also an ideal opportunity to integrate literacy with hands-on STEAM learning. Research has shown that story-based instruction can strengthen reading comprehension and retention. In fact, a meta-analysis of more than 75 studies found that narrative texts are generally easier for learners to understand and remember than informational texts, making storybooks an effective springboard for hands-on exploration. Additional research has shown that explicit instruction using story structure can further improve comprehension, recall, and inference-making in elementary-aged learners.
Seasonal themes can also increase classroom engagement by connecting academic concepts to experiences that are familiar and meaningful. Because Halloween is a shared cultural event for many children, it creates opportunities for collaborative learning while making lessons feel timely and relevant.
Best of all, Halloween is filled with characters, traditions, and stories that naturally connect to STEAM concepts. Students can investigate forces while designing a monster trap, explore circuits by creating glowing artwork, practice computational thinking through sequencing activities, or apply the engineering design process to solve story-inspired challenges. These cross-curricular experiences help reinforce science and math concepts while building creativity, communication, and teamwork.
Through Halloween-themed STEAM activities, students practice:
- The Engineering Design Process
- Creativity
- Problem-solving
- Collaboration
- Observation
- Cause and effect

Start With a Story
In order to make a narrative connection across subjects, we suggest starting by reading a seasonal story to your class. Then, design projects around characters and scenarios present in the book. Below is a list of books to kick off your Halloween literacy and STEM/STEAM project.
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson (illustrated by Axel Scheffler)
After reading this story, discuss with students how they would approach building a stronger broomstick. What materials would be best? How would they hold them together? Challenge students to create a broomstick that balances items when balanced across gaps in desks.
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams (illustrated by Megan Lloyd)
This story invites students to think of innovative ways to be spooky. Talk about how you would design a scarecrow with moving parts, or a motion-sensored machine to make loud, scary noises when the old lady passes by.
Creepy Carrots! by Aaron Reynolds (illustrated by Peter Brown)
After students discover that the carrots need to be kept in one place, discuss creative approaches to the problem. How would students create a fence to enclose the carrots? What materials, shapes, and contraptions would keep the creepy carrots contained?
Pro tip: Pampered Plant is a hands-on STEAM project for grades 2-5 that brings together coding and plant science in a fun and interactive way!
The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano (illustrated by Susan Banta)
After a storm blows away the round pumpkins, Spookley the Square Pumpkin is left standing. Which shapes create the best protection from the wind? Using an electric fan, have students create pumpkins of all different shapes (cylinder, sphere, oval, rectangle) to see which ones withstand the wind best. Then create a pumpkin launcher using rubber bands, and see which shape is the best to launch.
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat! by Lucille Colandro (illustrated by Jared Lee)
The old lady swallows more and more items to address problems in her stomach. All of the items are swallowed in a specific order to fix the problems caused by the last item. Challenge students to write it as a code and talk about what happens if you change the order or skip a step.

Five Easy Halloween STEAM Challenges for K-2
You don’t have to have elaborate materials or a high budget to introduce Halloween STEAM projects to your elementary class. Building on the ideas from the stories above, here is a list of project ideas that can be easily adjusted to fit your classroom.
In solving problems, especially when encountering failure, students lean on their classmates and teachers for support, assistance, and guidance. This teaches them important collaboration skills, and it exposes students to other perspectives. From this, students develop communication and cooperation techniques that are useful beyond the classroom.
1. Build a Better Broom
Challenge:
Can students design a broom that can carry more “passengers” than the witch’s?
Skills:
- Engineering
- Measurement
- Testing
Materials:
- Rubber bands
- Craft sticks
- Straws
- Toothpicks
- Tape
- String
2. Engineer a Monster Trap
Students create a trap that safely catches a mischievous classroom monster.
Concepts:
- Force
- Motion
- Design iteration
3. Design a Pumpkin Protection System
Can students keep a mini pumpkin safe from a fall?
Concepts:
- Gravity
- Impact
- Testing
Materials:
- Cottonballs
- Tape
- String
- Paper Plates
- Styrofoam cups
- Craft sticks
4. Light Up a Jack-o’-Lantern
Introduce simple circuits using LEDs
Concepts:
- Electricity
- Conductors
- Circuit design
Pro tip: TinkRworks’ hands-on Art Electric project covers these same concepts and allows students to bring their artwork to life with motion and sound. This provides an excellent opportunity for students to create a pumpkin, witch’s cauldron, or haunted house with LEDs and circuit design!
5. Code a Friendly Ghost
Students create simple directional coding challenges to guide a ghost through a haunted house.
Examples:
- Unplugged coding cards
- Arrow sequences
- Grid navigation
- Robot movement
Tips for Successful Halloween STEAM Activities
Whether you choose one of the project ideas listed above, a hands-on TinkRworks project, or a
Examples:
- Keep challenges open-ended.
- Encourage multiple solutions.
- Celebrate revisions.
- Ask guiding questions instead of giving answers.
- Let students explain their thinking.

Conclusion
