TinkRbot Explorer: Python + AI

Hands-On Robotics Learning

Inspire Innovation with Python and AI!

Introduce students to the future of robotics with TinkRbot Explorer: Python + AI. This comprehensive, hands-on project combines robot construction, Python programming, and an exciting new lesson on artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Students will build and program a fully functional robot capable of autonomous navigation, remote control, and complex behaviors. Along the way, they’ll explore key Python concepts such as variables, loops, functions, conditionals, and modules—while applying real-world skills like sensor data processing and algorithmic decision-making.

Now featuring a dedicated AI lesson! Students gain a foundational understanding of how machines learn by training their very own AI model and exploring the potential and challenges of this exciting technology.

Summary of Standards

Grades 9-10

Computer Science Teaching Association Standards (CSTA)
Students will design projects that combine hardware and software components, create clearly named variables, develop programs that combine control structures, test and refine programs, and decompose problems and subproblems into parts to facilitate the design, implementation, and review of programs.

Common Core ELA
Students will learn new content specific vocabulary, participate in collaborative group discussions, and interpret information that is presented through media.

Common Core Math
Students will write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
Students will use mathematics and computational thinking and construct explanations and designing solutions.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
Students will synthesize information to create new understanding. They will participate in student-led discussions by eliciting and considering suggestions from other group members, taking notes, and identifying points of agreement and disagreement. Students will use the order of operations to generate numerical expressions.

TinkRbot has allowed my students to get a well-rounded experience with hands-on building and in-depth coding, which keeps engagement high as the lessons easily appeal to all learning styles. Their creativity shines through the customization of their TinkRbots. I’ve seen everything added to their cars – from the more artistic, like fake eyelashes and diamonds, to more practical, like a 3D printed snowplow. Students take full ownership of their learning because they are allowed to think outside of the box and take risks. More importantly, they are allowed to fail, knowing that failure is the path to success.
