At The Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW) in Chicago, Illinois, Lindsay Mosshammer was determined to move beyond the rigid, textbook-driven approach to teaching science. With a focus on fostering creativity and critical thinking, she sought a solution that would allow her students to engage actively with science concepts, rather than just following preset instructions. That’s when she discovered TinkRworks—a K-8 hands-on STEAM solution that aligned perfectly with FXW’s curriculum.
A New Kind of Science Experience
Mosshammer began using TinkRworks with her second-grade class, where students embarked on projects like Pampered Plant, combining coding, electronics, and design to create their own plant monitoring systems. First graders also participated in Smart Lamp, designing their own programmable lamps. The hands-on nature of the projects sparked excitement among the students, allowing them to dive deep into the scientific process through exploration and discovery.
“TinkRworks helped me ‘tear up the recipe book’ used by most elementary science lab teachers and develop a more dynamic, engaging, and even surprising experience.” Mosshammer shared.
